Attachment theory explores the meaning, quality, and pattern of connection that an infant has with his primary caregiver, whereas attachment parenting techniques are a particular set of relational practices that support a secure attachment. Research increasingly suggests that while attachment parenting techniques are beneficial to the parent-infant relationship, it is the underlying quality of how the techniques are practiced that has the greatest influence on the attachment relationship.
As an example of attachment parenting techniques, Dr. William Sears, a primary advocate of “attachment parenting,” sets out what he calls the “7 Baby B’s” of the approach. They include: birth bonding, breastfeeding, baby-wearing, bedding close to baby, belief in the language value of your baby’s cry, beware of baby trainers, and balance.
