Applied Behavior Analysis is the practice of learning what leads to or impedes the development of new skills. It is used as a primary treatment model with children who have autism and/or developmental disorders and is usually targeted toward specific skill development. One of the most well known applications of ABA is the model researched by Dr. Lovaas at UCLA. The Lovaas model is an evidence-based approach that focuses on changing specific behaviors by breaking down skills into smaller pieces and rebuilding them into new, more adaptive skills. This approach is typically administered for 30 to 40 hours per week in two-to-three-hour sessions and is often part of the treatment plan with Regional Center services.
