Body/Body Awareness

Body awareness begins in infancy with a parent modeling being comfortable with his or her own body and its functions and that of the child’s during bathing, dressing, and diapering interactions. How parents experience their own bodies and relate to their child’s body and its functions is all picked up by the child and informs his or her self-image. This becomes very important during toilet learning, a period of letting go and holding on, and a time when a child learns what is the domain of the self as well as how to cooperate with his or her parents’ expectations.
