Speech and Language Therapist

Speech/ Language Therapy is the common treatment for most children with speech and/or language disorders. A speech disorder refers to a problem with the actual production of sounds, whereas a language disorder refers to a difficulty understanding or putting together words to communicate ideas. Speech problems include difficulties with articulation (pronunciation of sounds), receptive language (understanding and processing what is communicated by others), expressive language (the ability to communicate well with others), fluency (stuttering), and voice problems (including pitch and intonation). A speech and language therapist is also trained to work with oral/motor problems, such as swallowing and other feeding difficulties. (Adapted from Zero to Three NewVisions). Speech and language therapists are professionals educated in the study of human communication, its development, and its disorders. They hold at least a master's degree and state certification/licensure in the field.
