Movement therapists use movement to encourage emotional, cognitive, physical, and social development through a body-based healing approach. Movement patterns reflect an individual's thinking and feeling. Through movement therapy, the therapist encourages the development of new movement patterns, which may result in transformational emotional experiences. Dance movement for families and groups may be particularly helpful for sensory-integration issues and can be a port of entry to new ways of relating and engaging with others. It can be an especially powerful therapy choice for families with children with developmental delays or autism.
